Handel Semele – Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists

Handel – Semele

In a concert-staging directed by Thomas Guthrie, a glamorous team of young soloists joined the Monteverdi ensembles to bring the story of Semele to life. English soprano Louise Alder took on the title role, with the young tenor Hugo Hymas portraying the amorous Jupiter. French mezzo-soprano Lucile Richardot presented the dual roles of Juno, Jupiter’s jealous, machinating wife, and Ino, Semele’s sister. The international cast was completed by soloists familiar to our audiences; countertenor Carlo Vistoli and bass Gianluca Buratto.

In the absence of any live Prom concerts (courtesy of Covid 19), the BBC is re-running many gems from previous years.

Tonight on BBC4 at 19.00 is @johnwilsonorchestra with a starry cast of soloists and the ever splendid @maidavalesingers in ‘The Broadway Sound’. Possibly the campest ever prom?

Back in 2012 when this concert was recorded, I still wrote a backstage blog which may interest some of you – it seems a lifetime ago and I sincerely hope that those wonderful concerts will be back in business next year – in fact any concerts…..the prospects seems rather bleak at the moment.

Today, instead of singing with Synergy Vocals and ICTUS ensemble ensemble in Brussels for a week of performance of #Rainlive to the music of Steve Reich and marvelling at the beauty and energy of the dancers of Rosas, I shall be at home and attending an online seminar on Podcasting provided free by Musicians’ Union. Thanks you to them and hopefully the dance/music performances will be rescheduled sometime in the future…..in a land far away, beyond the horizon…….. See MoreSee Less
